Berlin in Context:

Alternative City Tours

About Kontext Berlin

Kontext Berlin offers well-researched, personal city tours – developed and led by Berlin guides who really know their city.

We work exclusively with experienced guides, historians, artists, and true Berlin geeks. All tours are independently researched, self-written, and passionately presented – without scripts, without clichés.

Besides the historic city center, our focus lies on Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, as well as Museum Island – places we don’t just show, but explain in context.

To make things easier to navigate, we have grouped our tours into the following thematic areas:

Discover Berlin:
Classic highlights for first-time visitors and newcomers to Berlin.

Gastro & Special:
Local neighborhoods, food tours, and uniquely themed tours.

Museum Island:
A core focus of Kontext Berlin – with tours of varying depth, with or without museum visits.

Context:
In-depth tours with historical, political, or cultural focus.

Tailor-Made Tours:
All private tours are individually customizable.

Klaus & the Kontext Team

Kontext Berlin was founded by Klaus Wehner – today it is a collaborative platform for outstanding Berlin city tours.

We share a passion for history, architecture, politics, art, and urban development. All guides at Kontext have deep local knowledge, unique perspectives, and a desire to make connections easy to understand.

Our city tours are not lectures – they are lively exchange experiences. Curious, critical, and always close to the city.

Our Philosophy

Good city tours explain context and tell stories that stick.

They should inform, entertain, and open new perspectives – for visitors as well as locals.

About Klaus
Portrait of Klaus Wehner

Hello! I’m Klaus Wehner, founder of Kontext Berlin. My passion for Berlin started as a teenager in 1986, on a freezing winter day when I ran up to the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate. The absurdity, brutality, and human dimension of this historical period were almost tangible – an experience that has profoundly shaped me.

After years in London as an artist and art teacher, I returned to Berlin to immerse myself in the city’s history and to combine my love for museums with neighborhood culture. Since then, I have led tours that are well-researched, personal, and lively – always close to the city and its stories.

My special areas are the historic center, Museum Island, and my home district Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. I combine professional expertise with personal stories and insider knowledge to create tours that not only inform but make Berlin truly come alive.

Kontext Berlin has now grown into a platform for some of the the best Berlin guides: historians, art historians, tour guides, and true Berlin geeks offering independent, passionate tours. Together, we bring Berlin closer to visitors and locals in an informative, entertaining, and authentic way.
